A perfect combo - El Fronton shot on a board with a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS. Imagine this chunk of a wave landing on you. Crushing!

Salomon Moore & I sat in front of this wave and waited for the light to get this photo. It is the perfect place to whip out a Canon 7D in an Aquatech Housing and click in the trusty old tokina 10-17 to shoot under the rider, to see his silhouette backlit by a greeny yellow barrel.

REUNION ISLAND IBA EVENT 6 - SEARCHING FOR SHARKS

Everyone was telling me be careful in Reunion Island if I am filming in the water, because there are many many sharks. Very sadly 1 week before I arrived the local Bodyboard and Surfing Community lost a great friend to a shark attack.

This made myself all the competitors and event organisers even more nervous.

I wanted to go find out why there are so many sharks and why are there so many attacks.

When i got there I was trying to find someone to take me diving with sharks so I could film them and have an amazing experience I once had had before in the Bahamas. It truly is amazing being down there on the bottom on the shark's level. You look at sharks so differently once you have experienced that.

Most the time I am shooting on the surface and the whole thought of not knowing what is underneath you can freak you out sometimes but once you see them on the bottom it changes you.

I didn't find someone to take me diving as the people I asked said it wasn't a good idea, and I also found out the the whole shark thing is a very big issue on Reunion Island.

Amaury Lavernhe, current Bodyboard World Champion has been trying to get the local government to start studying the local shark population for years, as he and every other bodyboarder/surfer/fisherman have noticed the increase in numbers of sharks around Reunion Island.

"People now only swim and enjoy the ocean in about a 5km stretch of coast on the whole island!"

Amaury and the local population blame the increase in sharks to the many areas of coast that have been made a natural reserve where you cannot fish, and the use of fish farming just off popular swimming beaches and bays.

It makes sense, more fish = more food.

However why have the sharks come in from further out to sea?

What is wrong with the fish/food population out to sea?

Who is fishing those waters? and how?

The people of Reunion Island really need a shark expert from places like Australia or South Africa to go there and start studying the local shark population, see where they are and why.

Then they can work together to develop a way to prevent future attacks.

There must be a way where man and sharks can co exist in Reunion Island and worldwide.

However someone needs to investigate what is happening off the coast of Reunion Island, how is it being fished and by who? Im sure that will help understand why the sharks have flocked to Reunion Island and do what they do best.... survive.

THE CONTEST

I shot 3 full days in the water 6-8 hours a day. My first day i cut myself on the reef and was bleeding most the day out there! I had to fight of the fear numerous times but having two jet skis and a dive boat patrolling the waters made me feel a bit better, until the next wave came and I would forget about the sharks.

The Nissan Reunion Bodyboard Pro was a fantastic event. It has been many many years since there had been an international Bodyboard event there.

It was windy to start with but the Final Day had perfect conditions and we all got to see the how good the wave "Les Archers" is for bodyboarding.

The standout of the event was Alex Uranga. Just days before the event started he dislocated his collar bone, but as he already had his ticket he thought he will go anyway and try and do what he can. Alex had to first make the top 8 in the trials before making it into the main event.

Alex won the trials! With the help of his brother and a lot of pain killers he surfed well and took out the trials and secured his spot in the top 8 GQS riders which will enter in the top 24 for next years tour.

Then came round the main event, and the winds were still blowing but the ridding was a great technical show and poor Alex ended up hitting his face on the reef, which left him looking like a "monster" as Alex said, but he didn't care it made him want to win it more.

And win it he did. It was a phenomenal effort, in fact I still can't understand how one can go through so much pain and still surf better than the top 24 and win. Amazing. Congratulations Alex your a machine.

HECTIC is all i can say about the Sintra Portugal Pro 2011 straight after The AGIT/TURBO Zicatela Pro.

Flying from Mexico to Portugal + Too many hours in the sun + too many beers x 1 week = hibernation

Man they were long days 8-9 hr days in the sun filming the Women/Drop Knee/Men Rounds.

Sintra has such a wild party vibe on the beach.

Congratulations to Uri Valadao, Eunate Aguirre and Dave Winchester who won their divisions.

I can't wait to go to sleep until the IBA World Tour's next stop Reunion Island.

The AGIT/TURBO ZICATELA PRO was one of the best events I have ever seen!

The Machine - Guilherme Tamega

What an intense final day to the Arica Chilean Challenge. Tamega just took that comp and the waves by the scruff of the neck and said you are mine. So much determination and focus with a pinch of lunacy.

That was the best EL Gringo I have seen, and one of the most enjoyable events to shoot from the water.

I knew the swell was growing all day and that it would be hard to get everyone's waves on film if I shot from a ski, there is not alot of room to manoeuvre around in the small channel which ended up closing out as the Semi Finals started.

So i shot from a board and all in all I think it was the best decision, I was lucky enough to get some nice shots and I didnt get hurt.

I did get pretty beaten on one wave though. It was during the Ben Player and Dave Winchester Semi Final. I had just got back into the water after changing the battery on my wireless transmitter and within 15mins the swell had jumped in size really fast.

I remember just hearing Ben yelling out and then seeing the jetski takeoff, as i got over the wave infront of me I could just see the horizon coming straight for me, the only thing i could do is paddle straight for it and i thought about duck diving with my camera and board but as the lip started to pitch i thought nup, bail the board and go as deep as possible (my camera and housing weighs about 15kgs).

The lip pretty much landed right ontop of where i went under and I managed to get reasonably deep before the impact, but the huge volume of water just pulled me back and sucked me over under water. You can just make out in the photo below my blue TURBO IV board just about to get lipped.

It rolled me in all directions upside down back to front and then back again, my fins got ripped off my feet (luckily i tie them to my ankles), my hood got pulled over my face and for a moment my housing was bashed out of my hands, somehow it came back to my hands while underwater in the washing machine.

While all this was going I remember thinking shit if there is another wave after this one im going to be washed up on a section of rocks at El Gringo called "tortuga" or turtle, because it looks like a giant turtle shell and if you wipeout at El Gringo the current washes you straight to the turtle.

As soon as i reached the surface I threw my hands in the air to let the Jetski driver know I need help. Then I saw the second wave, so i quickly grabbed my leash which had triple its length as it was stretched from the force of the wave, and pulled my board towards me, quickly jumped on it and paddle with my fin less feet, that is like having plastic bags tied to your feet!

I dont really remember the second wave, i think it was the adrenaline im not sure, but somehow i got under the next wave relatively easy.

The horizon was calm again, I took a deep breath and just felt my body rushing, pumping, full of energy, i knew i had escaped a pretty hectic situation, I felt very lucky, thankful and stoked. Then I continued to film the rest of the event in the growing swell and watch the worlds best bodyboarders push the sport up to another level. It was inspirational to see these guys pushing each other and themselves in such beautiful big perfect waves.

IBA BOX PRO - HARDY WINS!

Wow what an incredible day. It was 7:30am and there I was standing at main break beach watching 15ft lines rolling in, thinking im going out in this without a water housing to shoot on a jet ski!!!

Box wasnt really box but a pyscho 10ft+ shorey. There was not alot of room for a ski to zoom around on the shoulder, the shoulder was more of a left hander breaking into The Box right.

Seaweed was churning up from all the water movement and threatening to choke the ski.

All the riders were up for the challenge in the big surging rising waves. It was such a great show and epic to watch it all go down sitting there on a jet ski dodging solid closeout sets.

A huge congratulations to BOX Local, Ryan Hardy for the amazing win. His local knowledge put him on the best waves of the day and his flawless style and fluid ridding did the rest, so stoked for you mate.

Also Magno Oliveria surfed amazing and is on fire this year. His Invert he did was ridiculous.

All in all my Western Australia Wild West experience was incredible, new friends, new stories, new challenges and conquests, crazy experiences, many laughs, a few waves, late nights and a sunburnt foot.

Now its time to enjoy my last week in OZ and then make my way home to Europe and get ready for The Arica Chilean Challenge.

“Everyone’s going to want to win the first event. It’s going to be a spectacular experience.” - Damien King (AUS) describes the nature of the competition.

On this bright sunny morning on the northern coast of Gran Canaria, names of the competitors were drawn from three separate swimfins. One fin held the names of seven former world champions plus current world champ, Amaury Laverne (REU). In another, four talented international riders’ names rest inside the foot pocket. And in the third swimfin, the names of the four of the invited locals who will represent the Canary Islands sit and wait to be drawn.

Every four names called set the stage for essentially a super quarterfinal heat. Each of the 4-quarter final heats will see two world champs, one international rider and one local representative competitor. One by one, names were plucked out the fins and called out by your event host and commentator, Manny Vargas. The names cut through the crisp morning air and echoed off the stone walls…
